Soon to expire, PTI's RTI law being wrung through rumour mill

PESHAWAR: The much trumpeted Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Right to Information (RTI) law, 2013 still has a bumpy way to go before it makes it into the statutory book.

After the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf drafted the law, it was promulgated as a governor’s ordinance on August 13, 2013 and then presented in the assembly on September 16. Before it could be passed, it was sent to a select committee for further scrutiny. With less than two weeks left before it expires, the RTI’s trajectory has caught some drag with rumours of ungainly amendments.

Proposed amendments to KP's RTI law opposed

Representatives of NGOs strongly opposed the proposed amendments to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Right to Information Ordinance 2013 through which the provincial assembly has been exempted from accessing to basic information.

Funds analysis: Study suggests revision of education budget allocation method

A study conducted by the Center for Governance and Public Accountability (CGPA), Peshawar on the current education budget for Peshawar district has suggested changes in the overall mechanism of allocation of funds.

Financial years 2009-2010 to 2012-2013 were analysed for the purposes of the study, stated a press release.

There is a need for active involvement of beneficiaries of education services like parents and civil society groups, in finalising the education sector budget, it said.

Participants at a training workshop on "Budget Advocacy and Accountability" have stressed the need for disclosure of budget document and other financial information to general public through various means, which is now essential after promulgation of Right to Information law in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Right to Information Ordinance Significance of promulgation highlighted

Participants at an awareness seminar highlighted the significance of promulgation of Right to Information Ordinance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and demanded the law should be extended to divisional headquarters, Provincially Administrative Tribal Areas (Pata) and Fata also.

Access to information is due right of every human being: KPK Secretary Information

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary Information and Public Relations Azmat Hanif Orakzai has said that access to information is the due right of every human being and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Information Ordinance will play a key role in the provision of relief to the people of the province, developing good governance, curbing corruption, making the public bodies transparent, making accountability drive successful and above all making access of the people to the basic information.
